Do I need labiaplasty? Types and features

Blog

Labiaplasty has been attracting more and more attention lately. Therefore, understanding what labiaplasty is, as well as its nuances, including types and features, is crucial for making an informed decision about this operation.

Features of labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at changing the size or shape of the labia minora or labia majora. Labiaplasty can achieve cosmetic and functional improvement. One of the main goals of labiaplasty is to achieve a more aesthetic appearance of the external genitalia. The surgery may involve reducing the size or asymmetry of the labia minora, reshaping the labia majora, or solving other problems related to the appearance of the external genitalia. In some cases, labiaplasty is performed to eliminate physical discomfort or functional problems caused by enlarged labia minora.

Different methods of correction are also worth considering. There are two main surgical techniques for labiaplasty: traditional (using a scalpel) and laser. Both methods have their advantages and limitations.

Types of labiaplasty

There are two main types of labiaplasty:

  • Reduction of the labia minora. The procedure is aimed at reducing the size or eliminating the asymmetry of the labia minora and the internal skin folds surrounding the vaginal opening.
  • Reduction of the labia majora. Labia majora reduction involves reshaping the outer labia, which can be enlarged due to factors such as aging, genetics, or weight fluctuations.

Sometimes, a clitoral hood reduction is performed at the same time as labiaplasty. This procedure helps to eliminate excess tissue covering the clitoris and thus increase its sensitivity.

Difference between vaginoplasty and labiaplasty

There is another procedure related to the correction of the female genitalia, namely vaginoplasty. The peculiarity of vaginoplasty is that it is aimed at surgical tightening and reconstruction of the vaginal canal. At the same time, labiaplasty is aimed at correcting the labia (external genitalia).

In other words, labiaplasty is primarily a cosmetic procedure aimed at changing the shape and size of the labia, while vaginoplasty is a reconstructive surgery aimed at eliminating the prolapse of the vaginal walls.
