Calf surgery

Correction of the lower leg form or cruroplasty is a surgery performed to eliminate curvature of the lower legs. The surgery involves using implants (endoprosthesis of lower legs) or the patient's own fat (lipofilling of lower legs).

Indications for endoprosthesis of lower legs

  • Asymmetry of lower legs.
  • Extremely thin gastrocnemius muscles.
  • Insufficiently developed lower arm muscles.
  • Lower arm muscle atrophy as a result of diseases, traumas.
  • Leg type pecularities.

Endoprosthesis is carried out with the aim of improving the shape and contour, increase the size and eliminate the asymmetry of lower legs.
General contraindications: cancer, cardio-vascular and acute infectious diseases, chronic hypertensive disease, thyroid diseases, diabetis, blood-clotting disorder, the age of the patient is under 18.

Peculiarities of the surgery

During the lower leg endoprosthesis surgery a necessary space (pocket) is formed between two lower leg muscles, then an individually chosen endoprosthesis (implant) is placed there. The implant is placed on the posterior surface or internolateral surface of the lower leg. The incisions are made in popliteal spaces where there are natural folds of tissues. On completing the surgery dranage tubes, which are removed after 1-2 days, are placed in the wounds, special compression underware is put on the lower leg.

How is the surgery performed in “Certus” clinic?

Pre-surgery examination: 1 hour.
Duration of the surgery: 1-3 hours (depending on the complexity of the surgery). The patient stays in a clinical setting for 2-3 days.
Anaesthesis: general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedative medications.
Incision options: popliteal spaces, the posterior surface, on internolateral surface of the lower leg, along skin folds. In case of lipofilling there are no incisions.
*Recovery period. After the surgery the patient wears special compression underware on legs for 4-6 weeks to reduce the risk of complications. During the first week it is recommended to use a support cane or crutches. The stitches are removed in 7-10 days. Swellings, bruises and other side effects disappear within a few weeks.
*Side effects: temporary bruises, swellings, moderate pain in legs, restrictions of movement.
*Risks: infectious complications, hematomas, long healing, asymmetria of lower legs and postsurgical scars, displacement and deformity of the implant, highly noticeable scars.
*Result: permanent.

*The effect, result, risks, and recovery period depend on the individual peculiarities of the human body.

How is calf plastic surgery (cruroplasty) performed?

During cruroplasty, the surgeon makes small incisions in the skin of the calf and removes excess fat or uses implants to correct the shape. During leg lipofilling, fat obtained from the patient through liposuction can be transplanted into the calves to improve their volume and contours. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the specific circumstances and wishes of the patient.
