Varicosity treatment

Varicosity treatment

Varicosity (or varicosis) is a medical condition characterised by the development of gnarly superficial vein dilation accompanied by pain and heaviness in legs. Parts of the body which are the most susceptible to varicosis are lower limbs of female representatives.

*The effect, result, risks, and recovery period depend on the individual peculiarities of the human body.

The course of disease is the following:

At first gnarls appear on a calf or internal surface of a lower leg, then blue clusters. The more dilated veins, the higher the risk of phlebitis (vascular inflammation due to clotted blood coagulation and onset of infection) and thrombophlebitis (vascular inflammation complicated by blood clots). The worst scenario is when the veins are deep and the human becomes the disabled. There appear lasting oedemas, the skin near the ankle turns dark, there are pussy trophic ulcers.

Signs (symptoms) of varicose veins:

  • Vascular spiders.
  • Dilated, uviform veins bulging to the skin surface.
  • Skin discoloration.
  • Dermatitis, ulcers, bumps.
  • Leg swellings.

Possible causes of varicosity:

  • Inherited predisposition.
  • Obesity.
  • Pregnancy.
  • Weakness of venous walls.
  • Hormone imbalance.
  • Diet pecularities.

Types and pecularities of treatment

To treat varicosis two methods are used:

  1. Sclerotherapy.
  2. Venectomy (phlebectomy).

Sclerotherapy is performed to remove vascular spiders and small-diametre veins by injecting into certain dilated vascular gnarls the substance – sclerosant, which causes germfree inflammation followed by healing over of that place. This procedure belongs to low-trauma injection methods.

Venectomy or phlebectomy is a surgical treatment of varicosis recommended on early stages of the disease. There are a few methods of performing a surgery most common of which is a combined approach.

The aim of venectomy is to eliminate the disorders of venous bloodstream and stabilize the flood deflux in veins. The surgery involves extracting main superficial veins in the lower limb: the big one, running on anterointernal surface of the whole leg, and the small one, situated on the calf – from the foot to the knee.

Vein extraction is carried out with the help of a flexible probe through small incisions into skin in the area of pelvic, the area of the knee joint, on internal surface of the ankle joint.

An additional method is extraction of superficial gnarls, stitching and dressing certain veins through cuts or centesis of skin. On surgery completion the cosmetic stitches are applied to the cuts and the areas which have undergone the surgery are dressed with special bandages.

General contraindications: cancer, cardio-vascular and acute infectious diseases, chronic hypertensive disease, thyroid diseases, diabetis, blood-clotting disorder, inflammatory conditions in feet, pregnancy, old age of the patient, advanced varicosis.

How is the surgery performed in “Certus” clinic?

Pre-surgery examination: 1-3 days.
Duration: sclerotherapy – up to 60 minutes, venectomy – 1-3 hours (depending on the complexity of the surgery). Sclerotherapy is performed on an ambulatory basis (the patient goes home after the procedure). In case of venectomy the patient stays in a clinical setting for 1-3 days.
Anaesthesis: general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedative medications.
Incision options: in the area of pelvic, the popliteus area, above the ankle.
*Recovery period. After venectomy an elastic bandage is applied for 2 weeks, then elastic garments are worn for as minimum 2 months. The stitches are removed in 7-10 days.
*Side effects: temporary bruises, swellings, restrictions of movement.
*Risks: infectious complications, hematomas, long healing.
*Result: permanent.

*The effect, result, risks, and recovery period depend on the individual peculiarities of the human body.
