Aesthetic restoration

The aesthetic restoration of the teeth is the restoration or improvement of the appearance of teeth in the presence of aesthetic defects.

Why do you need dental restoration?

The restoration is used in conventional and cosmetic dentistry. This procedure helps preserve damaged teeth, restore their health and normal functions, and relieve the patient from pain and discomfort. At the same time,aesthetic restoration is not only a treatment, but also an improvement of the appearance of teeth, and, in addition to treatment, can improve the client’s appearance.

What problems does aesthetic restoration solve?

This procedure solves the following problems:

  • uneven dentition, chipped teeth;
  • aesthetic defects of enamel, such as its darkening, lack of shine and others;
  • caries on the front surface of the teeth;
  • tooth chips, trauma and destruction (for aesthetic restoration it is necessary that the tooth root remains intact and the tooth is not destroyed by more than 50%);
  • violation of the chewing function of the tooth;
  • presence of gaps between teeth;
  • violation of diction;
  • and, as a result, discomfort, reluctance to smile and self-doubt.

What is aesthetic restoration of teeth: types

Technically, restoration and dental treatment are one and the same, but restoration takes into account the aesthetic component: it is necessary not only to accurately recreate the anatomy of the tooth, but also to select the color and shape so that the tooth looks beautiful. Therefore, it is a more labor-intensive process.

Types of dental restoration include direct and indirect restoration.

What is direct restoration and how is it performed?

In direct dental restoration, the doctor builds the tooth directly in the patient’s mouth using a variety of composite materials. The most popular materials are photopolymers, but there are others. High-quality modern materials well imitate the properties of natural tissue and in appearance such teeth are indistinguishable from the patient’s own teeth.

This method allows you to quickly and easily eliminate minor aesthetic defects of teeth, for example, correct uneven or chipped edges. If necessary, additionally strengthen a damaged tooth, for example a front or chewing tooth. For aesthetic restoration, a pin can be used, on top of which a build-up is performed.

Depending on the situation, such restoration can take from 15 minutes to an hour, but if the defects are minor, the tooth can be restored in just one session. It is also relatively inexpensive, minimally invasive and most often not painful; you can do without long preparation and anesthesia. This method of aesthetic restoration is fast and reliable, suitable for both front, lateral and chewing teeth, and correction of crooked teeth. However, in some cases it is necessary to use another method – indirect restoration, which also includes different approaches.

What does indirect dental restoration involve?

Indirect aesthetic restoration uses dental prosthetics such as crowns, inlays, implants and veneers. Using this method may require the patient to come to the clinic several times.

Crowns are used for severely damaged teeth. Common materials used today are ceramics. Teeth restored in this way can be chewed, and in appearance, modern metal-free crowns do not differ from natural teeth. With a minimally invasive installation method and an exact fit to the tooth tissue, secondary caries does not develop and the tooth remains healthy.

Dental inlays are a recent invention and are used when a filling cannot be used. They look natural and are even used for front teeth that are visible when you smile.

Implants are placed, if a tooth is completely missing, directly into the bone tissue of the jaw. This is a more complex intervention than a simple aesthetic restoration, since it requires the work of a surgeon, but it gives a high-quality result.

If it is necessary to give a beautiful color and shape to the front surface of the tooth, thin plates of ceramic, composite or polymer material are fixed on the teeth – veneers, creating a snow-white smile, like those of Hollywood stars. Requires minimal gentle grinding of the tooth. This method of aesthetic restoration is popular today and available to everyone.
